Think of AIT’s chemists as detectives for the toxicology industry

At AIT, our scientists aren’t just concerned with running machines. Oftentimes, they are detectives, searching for clues regarding the identity of a specific drug, and they don’t rest until they find it. Here are some of their stories.

CASE ONE: “It’s rare to see someone in their mid-twenties just drop dead." 

Tom Leamon didn't know what to think.

The Stephenson County, Illinois, coroner was part of the ambulance team that responded to a call made from John Smith*, the owner of a cattle farm in Orangeville, Illinois. Smith requested emergency assistance for Gordon Blakefield*, 25, a member of his staff who had fallen on the job. He called 911 after learning of a text message from Blakefield to his wife, which simply read, “Help.” Read the full story. 

CASE TWO: “This isn’t a drug you see very often.”

As a toxicology lab, AIT is accustomed to finding various materials in forensic samples. But in 2007, the lab was introduced to one drug that seemed particularly out-of-place. Read the full story. 

CASE THREE: “There was no reason for her death.” 

Things were looking up for 82-year-old Erma Prince. She’d just undergone a successful hip pinning at Dunn Me¬morial Hospital in Bedford, Indiana. After the procedure, she was awake, alert, and enjoying visits from family members. The medical staff was pleased with her progress.
