Company Overview

AIT provides pain management, forensics, clinic, and pharmaceutical testing

In 1990, Michael A. Evans, Ph.D. founded the American Institute of Toxicology, Inc. (d/b/a AIT Laboratories) with five employees and one goal: to provide superior analytical testing and research to professionals in the healthcare industry. Today, the company has an experienced and skilled staff of more than 365 employees, including several Ph.D.-level toxicologists and more than 75 full-time scientists. AIT specializes in compliance monitoring, forensics, clinical and pharmaceutical testing. In 2009, AIT launched AIT Bioscience, a bioanalytical contract research organization.

Housed in two facilities with combined space of 55,000 square feet, minutes from the Indianapolis International Airport, the lab offers state-of-the-art analyses for hundreds of pain management, forensic, clinical, and pharmaceutical clients nationwide. Clientele includes leading reference laboratories, federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, corporations, government agencies, pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, physicians, medical examiners, attorneys, and courts of law.

In 2009, AIT added nearly 180 jobs, entered 15 new markets, and nearly doubled its sales staff.  The company has experienced a record year of growth. As of December 1, 2009, AIT has seen revenues increase 75% over the same period a year ago. In 2008, AIT reported an increase in revenues of more than 106% and an increase in net profits of more than 400%. On July 1, 2009, AIT President and CEO Michael A. Evans, Ph.D. transferred ownership of the company to his employees in an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP).

In 2009, Inc. magazine named AIT to its list of the top 5,000 fastest-growing, private companies in the nation for the third consecutive year. AIT moved up to 598 on the list, after placing 1,466 on last year’s list. AIT also ranks 49th nationwide for the Inc. 500/5,000 in the health industry category, making it the only Indiana company to be ranked in the top 100 in that category. In addition, AIT was named one of the top ten “Best Places to Work in Indiana” and “Small Business of the Year” by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce.

In 2008, AIT was named one of the top 50 “Indiana Companies to Watch” by the Indiana Economic Development Corporation. AIT President and CEO Michael A. Evans, Ph.D. also received the “Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year” award for the Midwest region, making him the only Indiana businessman to win the award.

Renowned not only in Indiana but also nationwide, AIT is ranked as a top-ten life sciences company in central Indiana. AIT was the first toxicology laboratory in North America to receive certification from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), a federation of national-standards bodies concerned with consistent rules of technical specifications. AIT also holds CAP and CLIA certifications and adheres to applicable FDA regulations.
