Patient information regarding laboratory drug testing

FAQs for Patients

Q. Why am I being tested?
A. The majority of unintentional poisoning deaths are related to harmful drug interactions from prescription, over-the-counter, and/or illicit drugs. In fact, the increase in drug overdose death rates can be largely attributed to prescription opioid painkillers (CDC, 2010). Laboratory drug testing is one of the most reliable tools for detecting possible harmful drug interactions. Patient safety is of the utmost importance to your physician. Knowing which drugs are present or absent in your system helps prevent possible unwanted outcomes resulting from your treatment plan.

Plus, laboratory drug testing provides your doctor with a complete view of your treatment program and allows him/her to make informed decisions about your medical care.

You can count on AIT to:

  •  … acknowledge your pain.
  • … provide accurate test results.
  • … follow the highest standards of quality in the industry.
  • … respect your financial situation.
  • … assist your doctor in enhancing your quality of life.

Q. What can I expect after my test?
A. AIT Laboratories uses a comprehensive therapy management test called the DetectiMed® Panel, which relies on cutting-edge technology and sophisticated laboratory methods, to provide you and your physician with an understanding of which drugs are present or absent in your system.  Once all testing has been completed (usually within three to five business days after sample receipt), your physician will receive the results of your test. Due to regulations set forth by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), AIT is only authorized to provide results to the individual or company who ordered the test—in this case, your physician. To obtain and discuss your results, please contact your physician.

Q. How much will this test cost?
A. For patients with insurance: Once all testing has been completed, AIT will file a claim for services rendered on the date of your office visit. As a result, you will receive an explanation of benefits (EOB) from your insurance company. Please note that an EOB is not a bill. Instead, it serves to explain the services you received during an office visit.

If a balance is due, you will receive a separate invoice from AIT Laboratories stating the amount owed and the date payment is due. AIT has relationships with an extensive number of insurance networks and offers flexible payment options to best meet your needs. For more information, call us at 800 875-3894 and ask to speak with a billing specialist.

For patients without insurance: AIT’s in-house billing department features highly trained specialists who will work with you one-on-one to determine which flexible payment plans are available to you. To learn more, call us at 800 875-3894 and ask to speak with a billing specialist.
